What gives it away is this CQP output:

2: teer work    VVB     work <as      PRP     as> part    NN1   part

CQP is displaying the contents of the entire line all in one go but NOT
separating them as p-attributes are separated (not to mention that POS
and lemma shouldn't show up unless you have specifically asked for them
anyway). 

Therefore, the line has been encoded as a single p-att, snd the best
explanation I can think of for that is that there are no tabs.

That's why "a"; catches nothing - because there is no word "a", there is
only a word "a    AT0   a", which matches "a.*" but not "a"!
