Initial Comment:
Searching for any category takes FOREVER is the metadata table is big (ie many texts).

So, all "classification" fields should have indexes on them.

Query: should "free text" fields have indexes? This will take up rather a lot more disk space, as every entry is different, and the free text fields are much more rarely searched on (only for one rather obscure mode of subcorpus creation).
