Either you failed to install pkg-config (through MacPorts), or your MacPorts installation isn't configured properly.  You should be able to execute this from the command line:

	pkg-config --list-all

Just to check: did you remember to log out and back in, or at least open a new Terminal window after installing MacPorts?  Though your paths should be ok if you can execute the "port" command.

Another question, just to be sure: what does

	which gcc

say?
