Stefan and I have been discussing this over the past few days. 

Basically, there are two problems: the technical problem and the management problem. 

The technical problem is that it's a big change to shift to a 64-bit index format - but it's doable given time to work on it. 

The management problem is that making those changes will break everything else, and shove the whole software suite back to beta status till we work out all the kinks and bugs. So we really need a stable 3.5 branch, with as many bugs as possible fixed, that people can use while we make the main development line temporarily unusable/unreliable.

It's the 3.5 that we've been working on this week - those of you following the bug tracker will note quite a lot of activity over the last few days.
