[CWB] Dramatic texts in cqpweb

It is not accurate to say that CQPweb is TEI compliant. Rather, CQPweb (like CWB generally) supports a limited subset of XML; as long as one's use of TEI does not exceed the boundaries of that subset, you can use TEI compliant XML elements just as you can any other XML elements. But that said, most use of TEI - including for instance any kind of TEI header - goes beyond the level of XML that CWB/CQPweb can easily cope with. Finally, CQPweb demands use of the <text id="..."> which is, IIRC, not compatible with how the <text> tag works in TEI.

So for all these reasons there is, by definition, no such thing as a single file which is BOTH an adequate input file for CQPweb AND a valid TEI document. To get the one from the other will always require format conversion to one degree or another.

With plays, I have found it quite possible to use one tag for <act>, one for <scene>, and one for speeches within a scene (<sp> or <u> depending on how much you care about the distinction between these). Adding a <stage> tag for stage directions is also easy, but note you will run into problems if you nest <stage> within <sp> / <u> in terms of frequencies: ideally you would want all <stage> to be sisters of <sp> within <scene> (so the two are properly disjunct). TEI allows <stage> within <sp> I think (can't say for certain).

You would also most likely want to use an identifier code for the speakers which can then be classed as an IDLINK value, allowing a table of metadata to be loaded for the speakers. Some of this is documented : pp 57 ff in the current version of the sysadmin manual - it's rough notes at present but I hope it will give some idea of what is going on.

best

Andrew.

Subject: [CWB] Dramatic texts in cqpweb

Dear all,
I am writing to enquire whether anyone has any (preferably successful)
experience of working with dramatic texts in cqpweb. There are TEI
recommendations for performance texts. Can these be implemented in
cqpweb satisfactorily or will the passage to cqpweb lose them? (As I
understand it, TEI is not implemented in cqpweb but cqpweb is TEI
compliant.) Ideal would be the possibility of searching within a scene,
an act, one (or several) speaker's contributions, the stage directions, etc.
Many thanks in advance for any pointers in the right direction.
G. R.
