[CWB] Corpus installation problem

Re>> I'm afraid I haven't kept the screenshot

Maybe ask your technician to look for the URL in the http server access log? searching for any line(s) that contain “installCorpus” should do the trick.

RE>> though I'm getting "0" results for queries in some corpora

Yes, the index data is gone. The corpora are not there. There’s just a record for each pointing at nothing.

>> makes me think I might need to reinstall

Definitely. There’s no way to reconstruct a lost index.

>>One possible clue to the reason behind all this, might lie in the fact that, in the corpus I was attempting to index, there was a trailing angle-bracket. I wonder whether this "<" might be responsible for throwing a spanner in the works

This is unlikely – the error occurs before any files are opened. The error is more likely to have been triggered by the parameters you specified when you filled in the install-new-corpus form. If you run the SQL query I put in the last email in your MySQL client (or get your techie to do same!),

select * from corpus_info where corpus="handle_of_your_corpus";

.. the (lengthy) result will contain some of those parameters and I might be able to work backwards to the cause of the problem.

Thanks

best

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for your answer.

Hi Graham,

This looks like you have run into the bug that others have reported whereby an error in corpus installation configuration causes the whole index data directory to be deleted.

I have never been able to reproduce or track down this bug. Instead I added checks intended to spot the error condition and abort before data can be lost. I don’t know why the system dd not abort before deleting index data in the situation you report.

Can you tell me exactly what version of the code you are running? (Version, or even better, SVN checkout number). Possibly you have a version that precedes these protective checks.
The version was CQPweb v3.2.30. I'm not sure how to get the checkout number, I'm afraid.

Also, I know you probably don’t have it open in a browser now after allthis time, but the full URL of the screen where you got the “Critical error in installation” message would be useful for diagnosis. Failing that, the database entry for the corpus whose installation caused the problem might shed light (select * from corpus_info where corpus="handle_of_your_corpus"; ).
I'm afraid I haven't kept the screenshot, and have messed around since, manually deleting things from a shell. Interestingly, there's also a tech' at university working on it, who seems to have got some of the functions back (though I'm getting "0" results for queries in some corpora, which makes me think I might need to reinstall).
One possible clue to the reason behind all this, might lie in the fact that, in the corpus I was attempting to index, there was a trailing angle-bracket. I wonder whether this "<" might be responsible for throwing a spanner in the works.
I'm sorry I can't be more precise. When the tech' gets back in touch, I'll see whether his debugging has revealed anything interesting and will report back. Thanks again.
Best,
Graham.

Thanks

best

Andrew.

Hello again,
The problem is worse than it first appeared. In fact none of the corpora word. I'm getting error messages of the following type for simple queries on ALL, previously well installed, corpora: "Corpus ``ENGLISH_TEST'' is undefined".
As far as I know, nothing has changed in the cqpweb since yesterday... when I successfully installed another corpus.
Help will be much appreciated,
Best,
Graham.

Hello to all,
I'm having trouble installing a corpus with the message "Critical error in installation: corpus dir not specified". After this, the corpus name actually shows up in the "Show corpora" area, but it is obviously empty.
Any thanks much appreciated, as ever.
Best,
Graham.
